What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins

An exact definition of sin based on 1st John, chapter 3, verse 4 KJV. “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” Usually, sin is defined simply as “the transgression of the law,” the idea of GOD is so complete, that sin can best be defined as disobedience to GOD’s Law.

The Expository Dictionary of Bible Words defines this word as “action that causes visible harm to other persons in violation of the divine standard” (Lawrence O. Richards, Zondervan, Grand Rapids, 1985, “Sin”).

Sin

The word “sin” being as small as it is, has a meaning of high importance consumed into it.

The Bible defines sin as the breaking, or transgression, of God’s law in    (1st John 3:4). It is also described as disobedience or rebellion against God in (Deuteronomy 9:7), as well as independence from God.

If GOD says “Do not tempt Him” and you tempt Him, you have sinned against Him. If God says “Do not covet anything belonging to your neighbor” and you covet anything belonging to your neighbor, you have also sinned against Him. According to “Isaiah 59:2 KJV” Isaiah says, “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”

Types of a Sin

According to dummies.com:

In the Catholic Church, sins come in two basic types: mortal sins that imperil your soul and venial sins, which are less serious breaches of God’s law. The Church believes that if you commit a mortal sin, you forfeit heaven and opt for hell by your own free will and actions.

10 thoughts on “What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins

  1. Wow so the 7 deadly sins is a real dark opening and it leaves me a bit depressed if I am honest.

While I believe in, and have a great yearning, to hold a faith that can be a shield for the trials and tribulations of daily life  as I get older and witness the pains and troubles of the world I find that I get further away from a faith in God.

As a child and teenager I had a strong faith but age, experience, education and a far greater knowledge of science and pre-history causes me to question whether belief in any kind of deity is logical and rationale or whether it is the natural human tendency to look for justification and self comfort in dealing with the many unanswered questions we all have to deal with in our daily lives.

So what I would be interested to know from you is why do you believe that I should regain the faith I lost all those years ago?

    1. Hello Hamish58,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins.

Why I believe that you should regain the faith you lost all those years ago is irrelevant when it comes to spreading the Good News! My job as a Christian is to allow anyone and everyone the opportunity to use the “Free Will” that GOD has allowed each and everyone of us to use to make our own decisions from the beginning of the creation of humankind.

This is the same “Free Will”, according to The Holy Bible, Adam used to make the choice to eat of the fruit of The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil. I never read that Adam was forced to make his decision, he chose to do this of his own “Free Will”.

When I look at the natural environment around me I realize that there is No Way all of this nature has created itself. I do Not believe anything existing in the atmosphere, hemisphere or stratosphere created itself including their own existence. Here again, what I believe is irrelevant when it comes to one making their own decision.

The Holy Bible is the most historically accurate book ever penned. Hundreds of ancient discoveries verify its accuracy.

Thank you again for taking the time to comment on this article.

      Blessings To You My Friend,

  2. Very good article, with this one wondered, “when have I committed sin”?

There is a big difference between having sin – being seduced by my passions and desires – and committing sin. James continues to write: «Then concupiscence, after it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, being consummated, gives birth to death. ”James 1,15. Here we see that temptation does not become sin (I commit sin) without first being consummated. This conception takes place when my mind agrees with desires. The result is that I commit sin, whether in thoughts, words or deeds. This is the sin for which I am guilty and for which I must be held accountable.

And many times they asked me about not knowing if I am committing sin:

I can often react, speak or think against God’s will without being aware of it. In Romans 7 and 8 Paul clearly describes it and calls it the works of the flesh, and being a slave to the law of sin in our members. Because this never went through my consciousness, I am not to blame. However, even these works can be carried through my consciousness later, and then they have to be put in order.

Thank you for the review on this very important topic.
    regards
    Pablo

    1. Hello Pablo,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins.

I agree with your capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of committed sin, as well as
not knowing when sin is committed against GOD. During my prayers, this is why I ask to be forgiven of my sins that are unknown also.

You really hit the nail on the head with your comments.

  3. Thanks for the amazing article, I found some answers here that I was looking for.

I am not a particulary religious person even though I was baptised a christian. I am going to try and apply it to my own life and try to do better. I think I have been better this year already, as I have been a bit of a sloth! Laziness is something that I have struggled to get out of last year, I am becoming better now already.

Thanks for the read and may god bless you!

    1. Hello Jenny,

Thank You for taking the time to comment on What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins

Trying is one of our pushes to make an effort, keep trying, if things does not work out, try harder until you see results.

Prayer is one of the biggest things that works for me.

We can do All things through Christ who strengthens us.

  4. Conscience can be very burdensome to those who commit serious sin. For example, King David wrote: “My transgressions have been poured out over my head; they are too heavy a burden for me” (Psalm 38: 4). However, the Bible gives hope to such persons. She tells them, “Let the wicked leave his way, and the evil-doer think, and return to Jehovah, who will have mercy on our God, for he will forgive him generously!” (Isaiah 55: 7).
    Thanks for the nice post.

    1. Hello Md Millat,

Thank You for taking the time to comment on What about Sin? – Seven Deadly Sins. I is easier for us to read what we should be doing according to the Holy Bible than it is to actually put efforts into action to not sin.

In my opinion it takes a whole lot of praying, scripture reading and service to GOD in order to achieve the ability to even begin to get focused on GOD to allow Him to change our hearts from our sinful ways. Even with All of that hard work, we still fall short of the Glory of GOD.

His Grace and His Mercy is sufficient!

Thank you again for taking the time to comment on this article.

      Blessings To You My Friend,

      Jerry
